An underline draws the eye to the one detail that can't be missed, like a date, a rule or a condition. Bold says "this is loud". Underline says "this matters", which suits deadlines and fine print better.

Clean lines

How do you get a clean, unbroken underline?

  • Pick an Unbroken style. Normal styles skip spaces, so the line stops between words. Unbroken styles mark the spaces too.
  • Check on Android. iPhones usually join the marks into a smooth line. Some Android fonts leave tiny gaps, which the Dotted styles hide best.
  • Watch the count. Each underlined letter is 2 characters, so a 12-letter phrase uses 24.

Which apps have their own underline?

Very few. Discord does: wrap the words in two underscores, like __text__. Word processors and email apps have an underline button or Ctrl+U.

WhatsApp, Slack, Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook and YouTube have no underline at all. The Unicode version is the only way to get one there.

Why does underlined text hit the character limit so fast?

Every underlined letter is two characters: the letter and the line mark under it. An 80-character TikTok bio fits only about 40 underlined letters.

Bold underlined letters count as 3 on X. Check the count on each card before you copy.

How do screen readers read underlined Unicode text?

It depends on the reader. Some ignore the marks and read the word normally, while others announce a mark after every single letter.

Keep underlines to one or two words, and never underline something a listener must understand, like an address or a date.
