They come from a Unicode block called Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms (U+FF00 to U+FFEF). It exists for Japanese, Chinese and Korean typesetting, where Latin letters need to fill the same square as a kanji so the lines stay neat.

The Rise of Fullwidth Typography in Modern Digital Aesthetics and Retrowave Culture
Wide text became the signature of vaporwave, the internet music and art scene that took off around 2011 and 2012. Artists slowed down 80s and 90s mall music, paired it with Greek statues, palm trees and old Windows graphics, and wrote titles in fullwidth letters and Japanese.
The best-known example is Macintosh Plus's 2011 album Floral Shoppe, whose cover mixes a pink grid, a statue head and Japanese text. Tumblr and later Reddit and Discord spread the look, and "๏ฝ๏ฝ ๏ฝ๏ฝ๏ฝ๏ฝ ๏ฝ๏ฝ๏ฝ" became a joke and a style at the same time.
Why wide letters? They slow the eye down. ๏ผฅ๏ฝ๏ฝ ๏ฝ๏ฝใ๏ฝ๏ฝ ๏ฝ๏ฝ๏ฝ ๏ฝ gets the same room, which feels calm, a bit unreal and slightly ironic, which is exactly the mood vaporwave goes for.
One thing most guides mix up: retrowave (or synthwave) is a different scene. It's 80s neon, chrome logos and driving at night. Fullwidth text belongs to vaporwave; the retro cyberpunk bracket styles above borrow from both.
Space
How much space does wide text take?
About twice as much room on screen, and sometimes twice the character count too. There are two separate things to track.
- Width. Each fullwidth letter is roughly as wide as two normal ones, so a 12-letter name fills the space of about 24. Phones cut off long names by width, not count.
- Count. Instagram and TikTok count one wide letter as one character. X counts it as two, so "๏ผณ๏ฝ๏ฝ๏ฝ๏ฝ ๏ฝ" uses 12 of your 280, not 6.
- Spacing. "S u n s e t" is 16 characters for a 6-letter word. Spaced styles are the quickest way to hit an 80-character TikTok bio limit.

Limits
Where does vaporwave text not work?
- Usernames and @handles. Instagram, TikTok and X only allow plain letters, numbers and a few symbols there. Use wide text in your display name instead.
- Squeezed spaces. Some sites merge runs of normal spaces into one, so "W i d e" can come out as "W i d e". The Wide Spaced style uses the ideographic space (U+3000), which doesn't get merged.
- Screen readers. Spaced text is read one letter at a time: "S, u, n, s, e, t". Keep it to one short line.
